THE DIGITAL OASIS: ROLE OF DIGITAL LIBRARIES IN ENHANCING EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES IN RURAL INDIA

The major challenge on the path of equal education development in rural India is called Digital divide. Socio-economic factors, lack of qualified teachers, inadequate infrastructure and access to good quality education resources remain to impact on the school's opportunities for rural communities. Digital libraries can be effective tools for improving learning outcomes, and for making information more accessible and available. The current study aims at assessing the contribution of the digital library to augment the learning opportunities in the rural India. This research study aims to assess the advantages, difficulties and implementation of the adoption of digital library in education using descriptive research method. The results indicate that digital libraries have a profound effect on the access to education, digital literacy, self-directed learning and academic achievement. However, its utilization is not that effective yet because of the lack of equipment, inadequate internet connection, and digital illiteracy and language barriers. The paper proposes that more investment in digital infrastructure, support in producing content in various languages, and incorporating digital libraries into the school curriculum and enhanced teacher training to better utilize the educational potential of digital libraries.
